-
- "Machine" in this case probably refers more to the Java virtual machine
- and run-time class libraries than it does to any particular
- hardware/OS platform. And we don't have many to choose from yet (did
- Netscape write their own VM, or did they license Sun's?).
-
- However, the fact that Java byte-code is not only meant to be
- transferable, but in fact is mainly used in such a manner, will
- likely enforce a greater compatibility between systems than is the
- case for most other languages.
-
-
- This thread appears in places to be degenerating into another language
- war. And there is *never* a right and a wrong, just horses for
- courses. C++ was designed to be good as a language supporting OOP and
- other design paradigms, while being easily accessible to C
- programmers; Java was designed as a language for mobile code, so
- easily verified by run-time security managers.

-
- You don't have to apologise! Spammers *never* apologise, and they
- make themselves far more unpopular. Considered comments are always
- welcome; it's thoughtless knee-jerk reactions and unresearched FAQs
- that aren't.
